Booking a Magician

Overwhelmed by the number of magicians on the net? Here are some important tips to consider when hiring the right act for your event.

Full time Professional Magician
Many magicians today publicise themselves as a ‘Professional Magician’. This term is unfortunately over used and does not apply to the many that use it. According to the Oxford dictionary, professional is described as “engaged in an activity as a paid occupation rather than as an amateur”.

You will find that many magicians who use ‘Professional’ in their literature are in fact ‘Semi-Professional*’. In other words, they usually have a full-time job working in an office and then on weekends to make some extra cash they will perform magic.

Richard Stone is a 'Full-time Working Professional Magician'. Therefore; he performs close up magic for a living. If he doesn’t do a good job, he can not pay his bills.

* Richard would like to note that there are many semi-professional magicians out there who will do a fantastic job at your event, but please be aware that the majority are well below par.

Photos and Video
As the saying goes “The proof is in the Pudding”. Before booking a magician it is extremely important to ensure they have photos / videos of themselves performing at an event. A magician wearing a suit holding a deck of cards smiling at the camera doesn’t prove they are a competent performer. If the magician doesn’t have any photos / videos on their website, don’t hesitate to get in touch and ask to see them.

Money Back Guarantee
Richard Stone is pleased to offer a money back guarantee if the client is not 100% satisfied with his services.

Free Consultation
If you are not 100% sure on the magician you are about to hire, never be afraid to ask the magician for a free no obligation consultation. Arranging to meet up will give you the opportunity to witness the magician’s magic and more importantly to see if he / she is the right person for the job.

Telephone
Never be afraid to talk to your magician over the phone. Within the first 30 seconds talking, you will know if he / she is an experienced performer.

Fee
The two most common questions that Richard Stone is asked is “How did you do that?” and “How much do you charge?”. To answer the latter is not as straight forward as it seems. Prices will vary depending on many factors such as:

  • What kind of event are you arranging?
  • How many people will be there?
  • Where is the event?
  • What time would you like the magician to start?
  • How long would you like the magician to perform for? Etc

Once you have answered these questions Richard Stone will be able to give you an accurate quote.

If you have been in contact with several magicians, you will notice that the fees differ drastically from one performer to the next. Most working full-time professional magicians will charge roughly the same fee. As the saying goes “You get what you pay for!” You will not be able to by a brand new Mercedes at the same price as a Ford Fiesta, even though it would be nice to do so.

Testimonials
Reading magicians testimonials are a sure fire way of seeing if he / she is good enough for your event. Please be aware of testimonials from private clients. These quotes are not always reliable as they can be made up by the performer. Always try and find testimonials from well established companies and professionals. If you are not sure, never be afraid to ask the performer if you can get in touch with one of their past clients.

Magic Circle and other Societies
Beware aware of ‘Magic Circle’ membership. Richard Stone is extremely proud to be a member of the prestigious Magic Circle, but being a member does not guarantee a performer with experience and professionalism.
